The First Loser

Jessie: Hey, mom. We’ve got some big news to tell you. I’m pregnant!
Me: Whoo-hoo!
Mom: Oh, OK.
(Mom goes back to cooking dinner.)

I wasn’t expecting her to break out the champagne or have her jump for joy, but come on, it’s going to be our very first baby! I’m admittedly a bit crestfallen at the lack of excitement, but I can understand. After all, she already has two grandchildren, courtesy of Jessie’s oldest sister, Sally. What’s one more to the family?

The saying, “Second place is the first loser,” is so true.
